In
the summer of 1998 two guys got together at a pig roast to sing
a few songs and “Headin’ Back” was born. The
duet (which went by the name of Switch in Tyme) added a bass
player and performed folk music and light rock to anyone who
would listen (they had an avid fan following). They also performed
at the ‘Old Clover’ in Vadnais Heights.
In
late 1999, Headin’ Back added a lead guitar and drums
to begin the quest in performing classic rock tunes. Their venue
was in the Coon Rapids region, playing at the Classic Bowl,
Coon Rapids Legion, and the Super Bowl in Ramsey. Members at
that time included: Greg Anderson and Ron Fox (Keys and lead
singer and co-founders), Roger Reidel (Bass), Dana Harrington
(lead guitar), and Ron Helgeson (drums). These five played in
the area for a two year period.
Roger
went on to better things in early 2001 and was replaced by Larry
Hoskins who is still with the band today. Dana also left the
band in the summer of 2001 and who is now playing with ‘Flashdance’.
Rockie Rash replaced Dana with dynamic leads and a “voice
of an angel” (according to Ron Fox). Rockie continued
with Headin Back until the summer of 2002 when he left to pursue
a music career on his own. Rockie is now a Universal recording
artist performing nationally (Rockierash.com).
Jim
Wear replaced Rockie in the summer of 2002 and brought a new
dimension to ‘Headin Back’ with clean leads and
a ‘Dire Straights’ sound. It was at this time Ron
Helgeson also left the band to be replaced by Pat Simzek, who
brought his dynamic voice and entertainment chatter as another
added piece. Five strong vocals were a characteristic of this
era of Headin Back.
In
the summer of 2003, Ron Fox moved to the state of Virginia and
was replaced by Kellie Rae Singer, a dynamic lead singer which
brought a whole new sound to the band. Jim Wear also left the
band shortly after and Mark Ackert joined with a Neil Young
sound, vocally and in his lead playing. In November of 2003
Headin’ Back won the battle of the bands contest at Diamonds
sports bar.
Headin’
Back began playing in new venues including Spankys in St Paul,
Black Dawg in Burnsville, and Tobies in Hinckley. The band was
flourishing with newer material and the dynamic voice of Rae.
However,
in late 2004 Rae and Mark decided to move on and create a new
band (The Rae Singer Band, Raesinger.com), who are currently
playing various venues in the twin cities. At this time Sandy
Brown and Rich Cone joined the band as lead singer and lead
guitar respectively. Rich, a laid back musician who just “likes
playing guitar”, is a perfect fit as a Headin Back team
member. Sandy has brought a professional musical quality with
her flute and keyboard playing, as well as her beautiful voice.
Rich,
alas, left us in June of this year to join his wife in Atlanta
(we tried to convince him to stay and leave her, but he wouldn't).
Rick Figueroa has joined us to deliver a very smooth "Santana"
like sound to the band.
We know you will enjoy his singing and playing!
Thus
‘Headin Back’ continues the venture!
